What happens when the last person who remembers a place decides to stay?

Everly Mills is the only law enforcement officer in Ridgewater, a dying mining town on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula where winter lasts longer than the money. She took the job because no one else would. She took the job because she grew up here and left at eighteen and told herself she’d never come back.

Her first week, someone starts moving across the rooftops at night. The routes are ones Everly mapped as a child, running from her father’s house to anywhere higher. The intruder steals keys, leaves objects from her childhood in her locked cruiser, and speaks through her radio in a voice that knows things about her that no one alive should know.

The late sheriff’s surveillance tapes show two figures: Everly on the ground, and someone who moves exactly like her on the roof above. Same frame. Same time stamp.

The town called their childhood protector “Rufus.” Everly stopped believing in him years ago.

Now she has to decide what she’s pointing her gun at.
